Abia Assembly Commiserates Nigerian Army Over The Killing Of Its Officer

The Abia State House of Assembly has commiserated with the Nigerian Army over the killing of their Officer recently in Aba, Abia State.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa during the plenary of the house today May 21st, 2024 described the incident as unfortunate and commended the Military for showing restraint in the face of provocation as well as the State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti for his timely intervention.

The House earlier, received matters of urgent public importance from three of its members. Firstly, from the Majority Leader who represents Arochukwu State Constituency, Hon. Okoro Uchenna Kalu. He presented a matter of urgent public importance which bothered on the boundary issues between Isu Community in his constituency (Arochukwu) and Ukwa Community in Odukpani LGA of Cross Rivers which has claimed many lives over the years.

The Majority Leader in his prayers pleaded with the house to send a formal invitation to the National Boundary Commission to as a matter of urgency step in to deal with the lingering Boundary issues between Abia and Cross Rivers State squarely in order to avoid any future occurrence.

The house committed the matter to its Committee on Boundary and Security Matters for further legislative action. Secondly, member representing Umuahia North State Constituency Hon.Anderson Akaliro, moved a matter of urgent public importance regarding the deplorable state of roads in his constituency, particularly the Umuawa Road, which is now impassable especially to farmers.

The House again, mandated the Abia State Commissioner for Works to mobilize his team to carry out palliative work on the road immediately to alleviate the Sufferings of farmers in that Constituency.

And the last matter of urgent public importance was presented by the member representing Ugwunagbo State Constituency, Hon. Uruakpa Chijioke regarding the inadequacy of EEDC and Geometric Power Plant Aba in power supply and its arbitrary billing of Abians.

The Speaker however, direct that the matter should come as a motion as it did not fall into the category of a matter of urgent public importance despite the challenges felt presently.

Furthermore, member representing Bende North State Constituency, Hon. Nnamdi Ibekwe presented H.A.M 23 as it was contained in the order of the day which is motion on the need for the State government to upgrade historic and iconic tourist sites in Abia State.

The House unanimously supported the motion as it will increase the revenue of the state and therefore granted all the prayers made by the sponsor of the motion Hon. Ibekwe Nnamdi.

The House in another development received the report of the House Committee on Health on HAB 9: A Bill for a Law to Establish Colleges of Nursing Sciences owned by Faith-Based and Private Establishments in Abia State.

The committee however recommended for its accelerated passage into law, and the House adopted the report as its working document.The house again received Another report of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs on the petitions against the imposition of a new traditional ruler in Ugwele Autonomous Community, Uturu, Isiukwuato Local Government Area, and denial of Chief Emmanuel Nwafor’s rights.

The committee also in their submissions, recommended adequate approaches to ensure peace, fairness, and justice in the community.

The House adjourned its sitting of today Tuesday 21st 2024 to reconvene on Wednesday, 22nd May 2024, at exactly 10:00 am.
