Abia State Mourns the Passing of Former Commissioner, Comrade Sunny Onwuma


The remains of Comrade Sunny Okebugwu Nwanganga Onwuma, former Commissioner for Labour and Productivity in Abia State, were laid to rest in his hometown of Ihie-Obuaku, Ugwunagbo LGA. Governor Alex Otti expressed deep pain in bidding farewell to his friend and colleague, describing him as a strong voice in the Abia State Government cabinet.

Governor Otti noted that despite the government’s efforts to save his life, God’s purpose prevailed. He emphasized that it’s not about how long one lives, but how well, and praised Comrade Onwuma for living a life that would be remembered.

The Governor assured the family of the government’s support, stating that Abia State would not turn its back on them. He encouraged the family to take heart and accept their fate with fortitude, reminding them that death is not the end of life.

Comrade Ogbonnaya Okoro, State NLC Chairman, regretted the demise of Comrade Onwuma, who was committed to unionism in Abia State, urging the family and state government to take heart and encouraged the family to sustain the legacies of their fallen hero.

Sir Onyii Wamah, First Vice President of the Old Boys Association of Government College Umuahia, described Comrade Onwuma as a dedicated old boy who served the association faithfully. He thanked Governor Otti for his assistance to the family.

The Bishop of Aba Diocese of the Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev. Dr. Christian Ugwuzor, stressed the need for upright living, citing a day of judgment, describing late Comrade Sunny Onwuma as a good man who contributed to the growth of the Church and assisted individuals in society.

In a funeral oration, Mr. Gooddestiny Nmesoma Onwuma described his father as a voice of the voiceless, a gentleman, and a devoted Christian. He thanked Governor Alex Otti and everyone for coming to support them in their moment of grief.

Late Comrade Sunny Onwuma was survived by his wife, Mrs. Stella Ngozi Onwuma, five children, and many relatives. The funeral was attended by dignitaries, including the Governor’s wife, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, and members of the Abia State House of Assembly.
