An unidentified Nigeria Police Officer, has shot one Mr Ikedi Christian Egwu to death at the Lokpanta quarry site located at Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State.
The Member Representing Umunneochi State Constituency, Hon. Okey Igwe, disclosed that the deceased Mr Ikedi who hails from Lokpanta was part of the Abia youths who warded off the unprovoked attack/ aggression orchestrated by youths of neighbouring border villages in Ebonyi State on the site.
Further revelations by the Hon. member showed that in the cause of trying to contain the aggressive predilections of the Ebonyi youths, Mr Ikedi was struck by the bullet of the unidentified Nigeria Police Officer stationed in the quarry site.
Hon. Igwe further explained that the police shot staccatocally into the air to disperse the invading youths but one of the bullets hit the deceased.
It is recalled that there have been a series of unprovoked attacks coming from Ebonyi youths over the site which have led to several deaths and injuries by peace loving Abians.
Reacting to the news which was brought as a matter of urgent public importance, the Speaker of the House, Rt.Hon. Chinedum Orji, regretted the unfortunate incident occassioning the loss of life and directed Hon. Igwe to ascertain whether the expropriation of the natural resources in the quarry was being done within the ambit of legality.
Similarly, the Hon. Member Representing Isiala Ngwa North State Constituency, Hon. Ginger Onwusibe and Hon. Chijioke Chukwu of Bende North State Constituency, advised the house to direct a suspension of commercial activities at the quarry site to allow flared tempers to simmer down and initiate a proper investigation to ascertain the remote and immediate causes of the continual skirmishes between Abia and Ebonyi States in the quarry.
