Ohafia May Soon Cave In – Deputy Speaker


The deputy speaker Rt. Hon Ifeanyi Uchendu has raised the alarm that Ohafia South State Constituency may Cave in due to erosion menaces.

This was disclosed by the Deputy Speaker during plenary on Monday on a matter of urgent public importance which read ” Devastating gully erosion sites in Ohafia South State Constituency, the non inclusion of same in the priority list of Abia NEWMAP and a call for urgent government action”.

The Deputy Speaker observed that the Abia NEWMAP which is world bank assisted state led project is saddled with the responsibility of responding to the challenges of gully erosion emerging land degradation and environmental insecurity.

The lawmaker while applauding governor Okezie led administration with the yearly increment in state’s counterpart contribution noted that the project has not executed a single erosion remediation work in Ohafia South State Constituency, not minding the number of active gully erosion which has ravaged many communities in that area.

Hon. Uchendu lamented that the gully erosion sites that pose threat to many lives, properties include Amaekpu-Elu, Onyirinmba road, Elu-Ebem Court road, Bakassi in Amaekpu, water works road Elu and Ndi Uduma Anola.

He therefore, pray that the leadership of Abia NEWMAP and the technical committee be mandated to visit the erosion sites for the on-the-spot assessment and subsequent inclusion of the same is the priority list for urgent action.

In his contribution, Member Representing Umuahia North State Constituency Hon. Kelechi Onwuzurike supported the matter raised by the Deputy Speaker but advised him to use safe help considering the time management of NEWMAP will come for their aid.

In the same vain, Hon. Mandela Obasi of Ohafia North State Constituency said he support the matter while urging NEWMAP to remember the precious one he presented to be captured while intervening in the Ohafia South constituency own.

The Speaker Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji however, urged the leadership of NEWMAP as a matter of urgency visit the site and do on-on-the-spot assessment of the erosion sites to save life and property.



On a personal explanation, Member Representing Osisioma Ngwa North Rt. Hon Kennedy Njoku expressed happiness over the road constructions completed and commissioned in his constituency by the state government

Hon. Kennedy thanked the Gov. For fulfilling his campaign promises, stating that for the first time a road is being built and completed in Osisioma Ngwa North State Constituency.
