Umuahia, Oct. 31, 2019 The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has commenced the training of 50 unemployed people on Sustainable Agricultural Development Training Scheme (SADTS) in Abia.
Speaking at the opening/orientation ceremony on Wednesday at the NDE office in Umuahia, the NDE Director-General, Dr Nasir Argungu, said there was need to train people in new technologies in agriculture in order to boost production.
The DG, who was represented by Mrs Chijioke Uzoatuegwu, the Abia coordinator of NDE, said the programme was in line with the vision of President Buhari Muhammadu-led administration to promote agriculture and ensure food security.
He said that the Rural Employment Promotion (REP) department of the directorate would through the programme engage the people in a more sustainable agricultural training.
He further stated that the nation-wide programme was intended to get the rural people to boost food production in the country in order to reduce hunger.
Again, Dr. Argungu said that the directorate had an extension service mechanism where the trainees would be monitored for their progress during and after the training.
He also said that the trainees would be given stipends and would be trained for three months, including two weeks of theory and 10 weeks of practical in crop production and animal husbandry.
The Director of REP Department at the National Headquartres, Dr Michael Mbata said it was important to train people that were interested in agriculture business.
Mbata, who was represented by Mrs Blessing Owan, said the training would equip them with the technical know-how on basic farming in livestock and crop productions.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr Felix Onyeocha thanked the directorate for the opportunity, assuring that they would not disappoint them.
