Livestock mgt : Prof. Oguike Tasks NIAS on Development of Extension programmes

Rev. Sr. Mary Oguike, a Professor of Animal Physiology, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike has urged the Nigeria Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) to develop extension programmes between livestock researchers and livestock farmers.

Oguike, who made the recommendation on Wednesday at the 45th inaugural lecture of the university, said that it would ensure that research findings did not end on the shelves in university libraries.

She also called on animal scientists and animal producing farmers to ensure that animals were maintained on feed materials that would improve their reproductive performance and efficiency.

Oguike, in her lecture entitled “Be Fruitful and Multiply the Earth” said that such feed materials would equally enhance the attainment of their genetic potentials.

“Large scale poultry farmers cull unproductive old layers and force moult productive ones in order to expand their reproductive live span to a second laying cycle.

“Aspilia africana ought not to be fed to animals meant for breeding but could be used for fattening farm animals,” she further recommended.

She said that animal reproduction, animal nutrition, breeding and genetics were all aspects of animal production required to work together in order to meet the national target of food security.

Oguike, who was the first female lecturer in the College of Animal Science and Animal Health, expressed gratitude to God for her inaugural lecture.

In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Francis Otunta, thanked the Revend Sister for her well researched work and for the new things learnt.
