As security of lives and property continue to erode Nigerians, the President, Vision Africa International and Co-Chair Interfaith Dialogue Forum for Peace Bishop Dr. Sunday Ndukwo Onuoha, has advised the National Assembly to shutdown proceedings in protest to the detoriorating security situations in the country.
Recall that Nigeria has for years now been grappling with security challenges orchestrated by activities of Boko Haram insurgents in the North-East, banditry, kidnapping that has become a regular occurrence in the country while much has not been done to address the situation.
Speaking on Wednesday in Umuahia, the Abia State Capital, Bishop, Dr. Onuoha, said the only way the National Assembly can make Nigerians believe they are indeed representing their interests, is for the lawmakers to shutdown proceedings of the two houses until solutions to the poor security in the country are proffered.
He noted that it was an abberration that the the Federal lawmakers will be having sittings regularly and making case for improvement on security of lives and property yet instead of witnessing a change in status quo, the security architecture of the country continues to worsen on daily basis.
The Methodist Bishop said a boycott and shutdown of the National Assembly in protest of the security challenges in the country is important at this time as it will appeal to the Federal Government to act with a view to addressing various security challenges in the land.
He faulted the refusal of President Muhammadu Buhari to appear before the House of Representatives to clarify Nigerians on his adminstration’s commitment to secure lives and property, adding that his visit would have reassured them as well as given hope to assuaging all bloodletting in the country.
The Global Peace Award Winner 2013, also harped on the need for a rejig of the security architecture with fresh hands adding that new service chiefs with new ideas on how to make the country saner and safer should be engaged.
