History was made in the ancient city of Ibadan on Friday 26th September as Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, a former Senator and one-time Governor of Oyo State, was officially crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
The grand coronation, staged at the historic Mapo Hall, drew a distinguished audience of traditional rulers, political leaders, and thousands of jubilant residents who gathered to witness the politician-turned-monarch ascend the revered throne.
Governor Seyi Makinde presented the Staff of Office to the new king after the Afobaje of Ibadanland, Chief Waheed Popoola, performed the age-old rite of placing sacred akoko leaves on Ladoja’s head, symbolizing the transfer of authority.
Ladoja’s path to the Olubadan stool is unprecedented. He represented Oyo South Senatorial District in the early 1990s before serving as Governor of Oyo State from 2003 to 2007, making him the first person in Ibadan’s history to hold both high political offices and the apex traditional title.
Celebrations swept through the city as cultural troupes, drummers, and masqueraders filled the streets. Many residents expressed optimism that Ladoja’s political experience will bring renewed development and unity to Ibadanland while safeguarding its rich Yoruba heritage.
In his first royal address, Oba Ladoja pledged to promote peace, foster economic growth, and strengthen the bonds of tradition.
With his coronation, Ibadan enters a new era led by a monarch whose journey spans politics and royalty—an uncommon blend of modern governance and timeless culture.
