The Abia House of Assembly Minority Leader and Member Representing Bende North State Constituency, Hon. Chijioke Chukwu has called on the leadership of the Abia State University led by Prof. Uche Ikpnne to account for the wooping amount of 2.5 Billion naira Tetfund Intervention received between 2016-2019 for the institution.
Hon. Chukwu made this known while fielding questions from newsmen in his Ugwueke country home.
Hon. Chukwu also charged stakeholders to ensure that Prof. Ikonne accounts for a whooping N3 Billion Naira in 2019.
According to Hon. Chukwu, so far, apart from the optometry block which has remained uncompleted, there is nothing on ground to show for the huge sums the federal government keeps pumping into Abia State university in recent times and he stated that “the judicious use of public Funds is an issue that should concern every right thinking Abian”.
Chijioke again, frowned at the imposition of what was called Pandemic Prevention Fee on students of Abia state university by the Prof Ikonne Led administration.
According to the robust and outspoken lawmaker, “levying the students in a period where even states a governments and big corporations are receive different forms if stimulus packages to cushion the economic effects of Covid-19 is the height of insensitivity”.
He commended the Governor for stepping in on time to scrap the draconic fee and suggested that instead of give the students cash, as the Governor has Promised, a gesture which can be manipulated and politicized, the Governor should channel the funds into school fees reduction for the students, to ease the burden of their guardians who are struggling both with fending for their wards and providing for the home front.
He stated that reducing their school fees, even if its for one session, is the surest way to ensure that only TRUE students benefit from the gesture and also stop politicians from hijacking the process, he concluded.
