Mr Meshach Jatau, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Command (FRSC) has advised the leaders and other road users on the need to get their vehicles registered.
Jatau gave the advice when he led the FRSC delegation in a courtesy visit to the Deputy Governor of Abia State , Dr Ude Oko Chukwu, in Umuahia.
He said, “If we don’t register these vehicles the problem is that vehicles that are stolen can easily be registered.
“But through the process of registering these vehicles a certain number can be uploaded into the FRSC server. And through this we have been able to uncover about three stolen vehicles in the state.”
He said that vehicle could be stolen in any part of the country, but if the vehicle was registered, soon as the number was uploaded into the FRSC server the name of the original owner would come out.
According to him, it was the reason some people had been compelled to pay for a new vehicle because they bought from the second hand not knowing such vehicles were stolen.
He said there was a national policy on the enforcement of number plates, vehicle registration for tricycles and motorcycles nationwide.
The reason for the enforcement he said was to checkmate kidnapping and robberies, adding that those vehicles were reportedly used for such criminal activities.
Jatau said the essence of the visit was to urge the state government to inaugurate the state Road Safety Advisory Council.
He said that the council would be headed by the deputy governor and permanent secretaries of ministries of transport, environment, health, judiciary among others as members.
According to him, the main objective of the committee was to draw the attention of the state government to areas where there were needs for action on the roads.
In his response, the deputy governor lauded the FRSC for its efforts in safeguarding the lives of road users in the state.
He assured the corps of government’s readiness to inaugurate the council, adding that it was very important as December approached when the roads would become extremely busy.
