Abia Assembly Moves To Halt Exploitation Of Parents By Private Schools.

The Abia State House Of Assembly has directed its Committee on Education to investigate the exploitative tendencies of some private school proprietors in Abia State.

The directive followed a Motion moved by the Member Representing Aba Central Constituency, Hon. Stephen Akachukwu titled ‘Motion on the Use of Customized Text and Exercise Books in Private Schools in Abia State’ during Tuesday plenary of the Assembly.

Hon. Akachukwu had in his motion intimated the house on the practice by these private schools which according to him has led to significant increase in the cost of Education, hence making it inaccessible to many Students and families.

He prayed the House to;

  1. Urge the State Government through Ministry of Basic Education and other relevant MDAS to intervene and call the shylock proprietors to order.
  2. That Abia State Ministry of Basic Education should initiate a framework for the use of text and exercise books in the private schools as well as monitor compliance.
  3. That the House Committee on Education should ensure the implementation of this motion.

The House in its resolution directed it’s Education Committee to interface with the Commissioners for Basic and Tertiary Education in Abia State, Chairman of ASUBEB and heads of other related Agencies on the subject matter and report back to it within 2 weeks.

The house Adjourned to reconvene tomorrow, Wednesday October 9, 2024 by 10:00am.
